Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Another bullpen scheduled

    19m ago

Jameson (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Jameson will be throwing his second bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last September. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo reiterated earlier comments and ruled out any possibility the right-hander would pitch in 2024. Jameson will continue to build arm strength and prepare himself for a normal offseason.

  • Paul Sewald ARI RP

Sewald blew a save against Atlanta on Monday, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one batter over one inning.

Sewald entered in the top of the ninth with Arizona holding a two-run lead and retired the first two batters he faced. However, he couldn't seal the deal, giving up a single followed by a game-tying two-run homer off the bat of Sean Murphy. The blown save was Sewald's third straight, and he's allowed seven runs on seven hits while serving up three homers over 1.2 innings during that span. Sewald had completed 17 straight scoreless appearances prior to the downturn, and manager Torey Lovullo confirmed after the contest that the veteran reliever will remain the team's closer for the time being, per Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic.

Braves' Joe Jimenez: Nails down save Monday

    6h ago

Jimenez earned a save against the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter in one scoreless inning.

Primary closer Raisel Iglesias worked the ninth and 10th frames, so Atlanta turned to Jimenez to close things out after the team scored in the top of the 11th. The veteran right-hander issued a one-out walk but kept Arizona off the scoreboard to earn the save. Jimenez has been one of Atlanta's top high-leverage options this season with two saves and 17 holds along with a 2.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 38:14 K:BB over 35 frames. Iglesias should continue to get the vast majority of the save chances moving forward, but Jimenez appears to be among the team's top closing options when the former is unavailable or used in a different capacity.

Twins' Kody Funderburk: Records first career save

    7h ago

Funderburk earned a save against the White Sox on Monday by pitching a perfect 11th inning.

Primary closer Jhoan Duran was deployed to keep the game tied in the 10th frame, leaving Funderburk the opportunity to close things out after Minnesota scored twice in the top of the 11th. The southpaw was successful in doing so, retiring the side in order on 12 pitches. The save was Funderburk's first as a major-leaguer, but it's unlikely he sees many more opportunities with Duran and Griffin Jax locked in as the team's top high-leverage options.

Mets' Drew Smith: Headed for surgery

    7h ago

Smith will undergo surgery to repair a tear in his right UCL on Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Smith sought a second opinion and ultimately won't be able to avoid going under the knife after being diagnosed with a significant tear in his right UCL. However, it remains to be determined if he'll require Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure, which would likely result in a quicker recovery. Smith is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister on Thursday to determine a plan of attack for the procedure.

Twins' Josh Staumont: Extends scoreless streak

    8h ago

Staumont allowed an unearned run on two hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning Monday against the White Sox. It was his first run allowed this season (on a throwing error), but he hasn't allowed an earned run in 19.2 innings this season.

Staumont has had an impressive comeback after having thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last July. He's had increased velocity as the season has progressed, reaching a high of 101.1 mph with his fastball on July 7. There are some causes for concern, however, as before Monday he hasn't had a great strikeout rate (20.3%), has a worrisome walk rate (11.6%) and an unsustainable 1.128 BABIP. Still, he's become a dependable option in middle relief for the Twins.
