How to Crochet a Crop Top

This easy crochet mesh top is made by crocheting two easy rectangles and then crocheting them together. You’ll be using basic crochet stitches and only need to know how to chain, double crochet, and single crochet. The pattern works up quickly and is super easy to adjust to your own body measurements.

Yarn

I used Premier Yarns Afternoon Cotton which is a DK Light Weight 100% mercerized cotton. It’s a beautiful yarn that’s easy to work and has a nice drape.

Mercerized cotton doesn’t have as much stretch as other fibers so the shirt should keep its shape. It can also be machine washed but it is suggested that you lay it flat to dry.

Premier Yarns has a great referral program where if you sign up you get a discount and can earn points towards future discounts, and I get referral points too. You can sign up for their referral program here.

The mesh crop sweater will still look good with regular cotton yarn, a blend, or an acrylic yarn. It’s an easy pattern to try different yarns and see what you like best.

Skill Level

I kept the stitches nice and simple for this summer top so it will be accessible to beginners. I wouldn’t take this on as one of your first crochet projects, but if you have down the basic stitches, you should be able to make your own top.

Stitches

The main mesh stitch pattern is created with double crochet stitches and chains. It creates little boxes that have an airy and open feel while still being structured. You’ll make two rectangles using this mesh stitch.

Both sides of the fabric are then worked around with single crochet stitches before joining them together using single crochets. Once the sides are joined, you’ll add another round of single crochet stitches to all of the openings.

That’s it! It’s a pretty simple pattern that gives great results. It is so satisfying to be able to make your own clothing.

Notes

This super simple crop is made by crocheting two mesh rectangles and then joining them and adding a simple border around the openings.

Counts provided at the end of rows 1 and 2 are the number of boxes you’ll have created instead of the number of stitches.

The pattern is written in size XS-S with M-L, XL-2XL and 3XL-4XL in parenthesis.

It is easiest to put the last dc of each row, after row 1, around the turning ch instead of trying to work into the chain.

Sizing

The crop is meant to have a loose, oversized fit with the bottom of the shirt sitting right above the bust.

To adjust the width of the shirt, adjust the starting chain by a multiple of 3+1.

To determine the best size for you, measure your wingspan (wrist to wrist), upper arm circumference, and around the top of your chest above the bust. The body opening is intentionally large so the seam of the bottom sleeve is not sitting in the armpit but will join lower on the upper arm.

Hollow Out Crochet Sweater Pattern Instructions

Make 2 Rectangles

Ch 46 (49, 58, 67)

Row 1: Dc in 7th ch from hook, *sk 2, dc, repeat from * to the end of the row, turn (14, 15, 18, 21 boxes).

Row 2: Ch 4, *sk 2, dc, repeat from * to the end of the row, turn (14, 15, 18, 21 boxes).

Repeat Row 2 until you’ve made a total of 137 (146, 151, 158) rows. Do not fasten off.

You’ll now work sc around the entire rectangle you’ve made. It is easiest to work the single crochets around the chain stitches along the short sides and around the double crochets along the long sides.

Round 1: Sc in each st on the short sides and place 2 sc around each dc on the long sides and (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner. (Short sides: 45 (48, 57, 66). Long sides: 276 (294, 304, 318) – plus 1 ch on each corner).

Neck Hole

Next, you’ll use single crochets to join both rectangles and close the top of the sleeves to create a neck hole.

Hold the two rectangles together, join yarn through both sides in the ch-1 sp of a corner. Sc across for 109 (116, 118, 124) sts. Fasten off.

Turn the fabric around to join yarn on the other end in the ch-1 sp of corner, sc across for 109 (116, 118, 124) sts. Do not fasten off.

You’ll now work a row of single crochet around the neck opening.

Round 1: Sc in each st around the entire opening of the neck. Join with a sl st to the first sc (116, 124, 136, 140) sc. Fasten off.

Body Opening

Now work along the bottom to create the bottom of sleeve and leave an opening for the body. You’ll use single crochets to join both sides of the fabric.

Join yarn through both rectangles in the ch-1 sp of corner. Sc across for 91 (95, 98, 100) sts. Fasten off.

Turn fabric around to join yarn on the other end in the ch-1 sp of corner, sc across for 91 (95, 98, 100) sts. Do not fasten off.

Next, work a round of single crochet around the body opening.

Round 1: Sc in each st around the entire opening of the body. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 188 (208, 216, 236) sc. Fasten off.

Sleeves

You’ll finish with a round of single crochet around each end of the sleeves.

Round 1: Join yarn anywhere on the armhole. Sc in each st around, join with a sl st. 90 (96, 114, 132) sc. Fasten off. Repeat on the other side.
