What an afternoon! Earlier this year I spoke with the one and only Ashley Leeds, on one of his LinkedIn Live "15 minutes for Accountants & Bookkeepers" episodes.During our conversation, the topic of preparation for exit and the importance of having a plan come up...So why is having a clear exit plan, and understanding of that plan highly crucial to any business owner?? 🤔 ➡ An exit plan clearly sets out a defined path to sale or retirement. If followed it should help ensure a smooth exit and maximise valuation and attractiveness to potential suitors.➡ Timing is everything on transactions. A clear plan executed correctly should result in you selling at an optimal time. Do not move too early, and certainly do not leave it too late!➡ Thinking of your exit way ahead of time, will help focus not only your objectives personally but also for the business. Which in turn will be of great benefit in identifying which route to take i.e. trade sale, merger, take on investment etc➡ Maximising Value. A well thought out plan will enable business decisions to be made in a logical and targeted fashion on value creation.It is not natural for entrepreneurs/business owners to think of the end game when first setting out. Your mind is more about building, vision and achieving...where are my clients coming from? What IT system do I need? When Accountancy Practice owners approach me to discuss their exit and retirement, we of course talk about the market and multipliers they can expect- one remark I receive (predominately in the sub £1m revenue category) frequently is..."That basically works out to be 3 years profit, I may as well carry on for 3 years James!!" True on face value, but this omits some pretty important points to consider;⚠ The potential risks and uncertainty of trading over the next few years; the economy, other external factors and of course market conditions for sale (valuations etc)💰 The financial, time related and stress related cost of running your business for a further 3 years. Delaying your wish to slow down, preventing you from enjoying some time on the golf course, sipping a pina colada on the beach or spending time with your grandchildren.🤼♂️ You can ensure a smooth transition over 2-3 years for your staff, your clients and the business. A couple of weekends ago World Cup-on-Sea ® took place, a business charity football tournament organised by AJ Chambers ® held at Southend United Football Club ground, Roots Hall ⚽ I was absolutely gutted not to have been around to play this year, as it is always a highlight of my year and an event I love to take part in! Whilst the day is a lot of fun, at the core of the event is it's fundraising for charity.
