This guide will show and explain where to find the Fragment Markers and how to use them in order to get the alternate ending in the Dead Space Remake!
Dead Space houses many secrets from hidden lore, easter eggs, and secret interactions. One such secret quest you can take on is to gain the alternate ending fo the game’s remake.
Unlocking the alternate ending is done by starting a New Game Plus and looking around the ship for 12 Marker Fragments. In this guide, I’ll be showing you where you can find all of the Marker Fragments in a new game plus and what you’ll need to do with them.
Marker Fragment Locations
Marker Fragments will either be in plain sight during a main quest or they can be hidden. It’s always good to keep your eyes out for a purple light while exploring in a new game plus as that’s the light Marker Fragments have.

Chapter 1
The first Marker Fragment can be found on the Flight Deck in the Maintenance Office where you find the Data Board where you repair the Tram System. There will be some books in the way you’ll need to shoot before you can pick it up.
Chapter 2
The second Marker Fragment can be found on the Medical Deck’s 1st floor in Dr. Kyne’s office. This is the room where you find a hologram of Dr. Kyne talking to Captain Mathias.
There is a bookshelf you can use Kinesis on which will reveal a hidden room behind it. Here you can find some ammo and the Marker Fragment on a desk.
Chapter 3
When you get to the Engine Room in Chapter 3, the Marker Fragment will be hidden in a dark corner on the northeast side of the room.
Chapter 4
If you go to the Break Room on the Bridge deck’s 1st floor. This is where you find the Unitology video and mysterious circle on the floor, you’ll also find the 4th Marker Fragment there as well.
Chapter 5
There are two Marker Fragments you can find in Chapter 5. The 5th Marker Fragment can be found in Dr. Mercer’s office on the Medical Deck next to the Infector taxidermy.
The 6th Marker Fragment can be found on top of the Cryogenics Chamber where you find the Liquid Nitrogen and freeze the Hunter at the end of Chapter 5.
Chapter 6
The 7th Marker Fragment can be found floating in in the East Grow Chamber of the Hydroponics Bay. Fly up to the northwest corner of the room to find the Marker Fragment hidden above.
Chapter 7
After you find Dallas’s RIG in Chapter 7, you’ll be able to backtrack to the Mineral Samples room and find the 8th Marker Fragment on a shelf. This room requires Level 3 Clearance to access.
Chapter 8
The 9th Marker Fragment can be found near the mysterious flesh pit in the Communications Array.
Chapter 10
The 10th Marker Fragment can be found in the Deluxe Shift Quarters on the Crew Deck. You’ll need to power a nearby circuit breaker and allocate power to the doors where this fragment is found.
The 11th Marker Fragment can be found in the Inquiry Desks where you talk to Dr. Kyne about the Hive Mind.
Chapter 11
The 12th and final Marker Fragment can be found on the southwest corner of the Cargo Bay where you move the Marker.
How to use the Marker Fragments
In order to use the Marker Fragments, you’ll need to go to the Crew Deck’s Executive Quarters. Find Lt Commander Holt’s quarters and inside you’ll find a table with a Marker statue and 12 candles. Interact with the table to place your Marker Fragments onto the candles.
Once all 12 Marker Fragments are placed onto these candles, all you’ll need to do is complete the game. You’ll find out what exactly the alternate ending is after you defeat the Hive Mind though if you want to see it, I encourage you to find out yourself. Dead Space Alternate Ending Explained
The Alternate Ending affects the end cinematic of Dead Space. Instead of Isaac mourning the loss of Nicole only to be attacked by a hallucination of her, things here are very different.
You’ll find instead that Isaac is… happy? Not only that but the interior of the shuttle has Marker Symbols written in what likely is blood all over. This is rather eerie but it gets worse when we see Isaac is talking to Nicole who appears to be dead yet walking and talking.
The two will talk about how great the Ishimura was followed by Isaac asking if they’re going home. Isaac says he has to build something first but what that is will be a surprise. The camera will show the two from behind as Isaac’s helmet lays on the floor where you can see even more Marker Symbols.
So Isaac has clearly gone insane in this ending, who wouldn’t after what he’s been through. But this alternate ending can line up with the premise of Dead Space 2 where Isaac is found insane and EarthGov places him in a mental ward. Which ending you prefer to be the one that’s used in the story of Dead Space is up to you.
A fun fact about this ending cutscene is that the helmet on the floor changes depending on which RIG suit you were wearing when you beat the game. Using the Infested RIG suit makes this ending rather funny as Isaac is just missing his head while talking.
